Getting Started in Commercial Pig Farming in Ghana

12 May 2026

Commercial pig farming in Ghana has grown steadily as demand for locally produced pork rises. Moving from a handful of backyard pigs to a commercial herd requires a different level of planning across land, housing, breed selection, and financing.

Start with a realistic herd size based on your land, water access, and market. Most new commercial farms begin with a small breeding nucleus of gilts and a boar (or access to artificial insemination) rather than buying growers outright, since this builds a sustainable pipeline of weaners over time.

Housing should separate farrowing, weaning, growing, and finishing stages. Poor separation is one of the most common causes of preventable disease spread on new farms.

Finally, budget for feed as your largest recurring cost — quality feed and a consistent feeding programme have a bigger impact on growth rates and profitability than almost any other input.
